William James characterized pragmatism as a new term for old ways of thinking in 1907 when he published his lectures "Pragmatism: A New Name for Old Ways of Thinking." He began by describing the 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly unsolvable conflict between two different ways of thinking, the tough-minded empiricist belief in the experience of things and going through the facts, versus the soft-hearted preference for a priori-based principles that rely on rationalization. The term pragmatic originated in the United States around 1870.
